City of Coal Run Independence Day Fireworks Display to go on as planned

June 15, 2020

While some cities and towns throughout the United States are cancelling or postponing Fourth of July festivities this year, Coal Run’s fireworks display will go on as planned.

Just after dusk on Friday, July 3rd, 2020, the hard-working men and women of the Coal Run Village Fire Department will begin launching a volley of colorful, patriotic mortars in celebration of the 244th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. We expect the show to begin at around 10:00pm and last approximately 30 minutes.

While the threat of COVID-19 has not abated here in eastern Kentucky, the birth of the United States of America is too important a holiday to be cancelled or pushed to another date. Many of our forefathers fought and died in the Revolutionary War to build the foundation of this great nation, and we are committed to honoring their sacrifices with a public display of appreciation.

Our City Park will be open to the public for those who wish to watch the show from in the floodplain behind City Hall but the Governor has restricted groups to a limit of 50 persons or less so please make sure you or your group maintains 6’ social distancing from other groups or individuals not associated with you or your group. You may also watch from your cars in any of the parking spots on Main Street or in retail parking lots such as the old Big Lots location, Weddington Branch, Rural King, Weddington Plaza, Power Drive, Weddington Square, Crossroads Plaza, etc.

Unfortunately concerts, even outdoor concerts, are banned by the state right now so we cannot have a band on stage this year. And we also are prohibited from providing free food and beverages at Coal Run Community Center as we have done in prior years so please remember to bring food and drinks with you if you intend to arrive early.

With all the division that’s being sown throughout the United States right now, we here in Coal Run think it vitally important to allow those who wish to celebrate the birth of our great and exceptional nation to do so together in a public space they helped build with their own tax dollars.

Again, the threat of COVID-19 has not gone away and Frankfort is still mandating social distancing and masks in groups but we trust you to be responsible and decide what’s best for you and your family.

Wishing each and every one of you a safe and blessed Independence Day whether you celebrate with us in Coal Run or elsewhere. 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
